2. Agia Pelagia
Twenty-five minutes northwest, this sheltered horseshoe bay has some of the calmest, clearest water near the city. The village wrapped around it is full of tavernas with tables almost on the sand — a favourite of Heraklion families on a Sunday.
3. Matala
The one everyone’s heard of. On the south coast, about 70 minutes away, Matala’s soft sand curves beneath cliffs riddled with prehistoric caves — later home to 1960s hippies (Joni Mitchell wrote a song about it). The swimming is superb and the sunset legendary.
