Heraklion has no beach of its own worth the name — the seafront by the Venetian harbour is a working port. Ammoudara is the answer to that, and it is close enough that many visitors treat it as the city’s beach rather than a separate resort.
The name means “big sand”, which is fair: the beach runs about 7km along the Gulf of Heraklion, from the mouth of the Giofyros river in the east westward towards the Almyros and Linoperamata. That length is why distances quoted for it vary between 5 and 8km from the city centre — it depends entirely which end you mean.
The beach
Soft yellow sand, shallow water, few sharp rocks, and an EU Blue Flag for water quality. Long stretches are organised — sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, showers, changing rooms — and lifeguards patrol parts of it. Behind the sand runs a promenade of restaurants, cafés and shops.
The one thing to know before booking is the wind. The north coast of Crete gets a persistent breeze through the season and Ammoudara catches it squarely, which is why windsurf schools operate here all year and why jet-skiing and parasailing are on offer alongside. For some people that is the attraction. If you want flat water for small children, the sheltered bays further west at Agia Pelagia and Lygaria are the better call.
What it is like
Ammoudara is not a quiet village and does not pretend to be. It has grown into a proper resort strip: hotels of every level along the coastal road, most with sea views and beach access, plus apartments and budget rooms behind. In high season the beach bars turn up the music after dark and there are beach parties — livelier than the western bays, nothing like Malia.
The result is a place that suits two quite different trips. It works for families, on the shallow water and the lifeguards. And it works for people who want a beach base with some evening atmosphere but still want to be twenty minutes from a Venetian old town and a world-class museum.
Getting there and around
City bus line 6 runs from Heraklion centre, which makes Ammoudara the only resort near the city you can genuinely treat as a day trip without a car. By car it is about 15 minutes on the coastal road west.
That proximity is the argument for staying here over anywhere else on this coast. Knossos, the Archaeological Museum, the old town and the ferry port are all comfortably reachable, and you are still sleeping by a beach.
