Twenty-five minutes northwest, this sheltered horseshoe bay has some of the calmest, clearest water near the city. The village wrapped around it is full of tavernas with tables almost on the sand — a favourite of Heraklion families on a Sunday.
3. Matala
The one everyone’s heard of. On the south coast, about 70 minutes away, Matala’s soft sand curves beneath cliffs riddled with prehistoric caves — later home to 1960s hippies (Joni Mitchell wrote a song about it). The swimming is superb and the sunset legendary.
4. Karteros & Kokkini Hani
Immediately east of Heraklion, this run of sandy, shallow beaches is where locals go when they don’t want to travel. Bus-accessible and family-friendly.
5. Vai (Palm Beach)
A serious day trip — right out in the east of Crete — but Vai is unforgettable: a genuinely tropical-looking bay backed by Europe’s largest natural palm grove. Go early to beat the crowds.
6. Kalamaki & Kommos
Near Matala on the south coast, these quieter beaches offer the same warm Libyan Sea with a fraction of the visitors. Kommos also has a Minoan harbour site right behind the sand.
7. Lygaria

8. Dia Island
