The Short Answer
Heraklion is a year-round destination, but the shoulder seasons — May–June and September–October — are the best time to visit. You get hot-enough weather, warm sea, and every site and taverna open, without the searing July heat, the cruise-ship crowds at Knossos, or peak-season room rates. If you can only travel in summer, that’s fine too; if you want value and calm, aim for the shoulders. Here’s the month-by-month detail.
Spring (April – June)
April wakes the island up. The countryside is green and covered in wildflowers, daytime temperatures sit around 18–22°C, and the archaeological sites are blissfully quiet. The sea is still cool for swimming, but for sightseeing it’s glorious.
May is one of the finest months to visit: warm, sunny days (22–26°C), long daylight, and the first properly swimmable sea by month’s end. Crowds and prices are still moderate.
June brings full summer warmth (26–30°C) and warm water, but the worst of the peak-season crush hasn’t quite arrived. An excellent all-rounder for beaches and sights alike.
Summer (July – August)
The hottest, busiest and priciest window. Expect 30–34°C (sometimes higher inland), intense sun, and packed sites — Knossos in particular is best visited at opening time to beat both heat and cruise crowds. The sea is warm and the nightlife is at full tilt. If you’re travelling with school-age children and locked into these months, plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings, and beaches or the pool for the midday heat.
Autumn (September – October)
September may be the best month of all. The land and sea have soaked up a whole summer of heat, so swimming is at its warmest, yet the crowds thin out and prices ease after the first week. Days are still 27–30°C.
October is a lovely, gentle month — warm days (23–27°C early on), swimmable sea for the first half, and a relaxed, end-of-season feel. A superb time for combining beaches with history.
Winter (November – March)
Heraklion doesn’t close. Temperatures drop to around 12–17°C by day, with some rain, and the city returns to the Cretans. This is the time for culture and value: Knossos and the world-class Archaeological Museum without the queues, tavernas full of locals, and the lowest room rates of the year. It’s too cool for the beach and some seaside resorts shut down, but for a food-and-history city break, off-season Heraklion is quietly wonderful.
