The Perfect 3-Day Heraklion Itinerary
Three days is the ideal amount of time to experience the best of Heraklion — ancient history, charming old town streets, and the stunning south coast. Here’s our tried-and-tested itinerary.
Day 1: Ancient Heraklion
Morning: Knossos Palace
Start early — be at Knossos by 8am to beat the heat and crowds. Allow 2-3 hours to explore the palace complex. We recommend booking a guided tour for the full Minoan experience.
Afternoon: Archaeological Museum & Old Town
Head back to the city center for lunch at a taverna near Lions Square. After lunch, visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum to see the artifacts from Knossos and other Minoan sites.
Spend the rest of the afternoon wandering the old town:
- Morosini Fountain (Lion Fountain)
- Agios Titos Church
- Koules Fortress at the harbor
- 25th August Street for shopping
Evening: Dinner in the Old Town
Heraklion has an excellent dining scene. Try Peskesi for modern Cretan cuisine or Kastella for traditional meze.
Day 2: Wine & Villages
Morning: Archanes Village
Drive or take a tour to Archanes, a charming wine-producing village 15km south of the city. Spend the morning wandering the beautifully restored streets and visiting the local museum.
Afternoon: Wine Tasting
Book a wine tasting tour at one of the Archanes wineries. Boutari and Lyrarakis both offer excellent tastings of indigenous Cretan varieties.
Late Afternoon: Return to Heraklion
Head back to the city for a relaxed evening. Walk along the harbor, enjoy a drink at a waterfront cafe, and have dinner at Ippokampos for seafood.
Day 3: South Coast Adventure
Morning: Drive to Matala
Drive south (about 1.5 hours) to Matala, the famous beach with caves where hippies lived in the 1960s. The drive takes you through the scenic Messara Plain.
Afternoon: Beach & Caves
Spend the afternoon at Matala Beach. Explore the caves (small entry fee), swim in the crystal-clear water, and have lunch at a beachfront taverna.
Optional: Phaistos Palace
On the way back, stop at Phaistos Palace — the second-largest Minoan palace, far less crowded than Knossos. Allow 1-2 hours.
Evening: Return to Heraklion
Drive back to Heraklion for your final dinner. Try Thigaterra for a memorable farewell meal.

- Rent a car for days 2 and 3 — it gives you maximum flexibility
