Why Stay Near the Port at All
For most Heraklion visits, the answer is you should not — the old town is more pleasant and it is barely further away.
But two situations make port proximity genuinely worth planning around:
- An early sailing. High-speed ferries to Santorini and the Cyclades leave from around 07:30, and foot passengers check in 30–45 minutes beforehand. That is a 06:45 arrival at the terminal.
- A late or pre-dawn arrival. The overnight from Piraeus docks around 06:00, hours before any hotel will check you in.
In both cases, being able to walk — rather than negotiating a taxi at 6am or dragging bags a kilometre — is the whole point. Every hotel below is within roughly 15 minutes of the passenger terminal on flat, paved ground.

~10 minutes’ walk. The most comfortable hotel in central Heraklion, right beside the Venetian fortress. Rooftop pool, excellent breakfast. If you are bookending a ferry crossing with one good night, this is where to spend it.
4. Domus Renier — Best Character
~12 minutes’ walk. A restored Venetian-era building on Lions Square, in the middle of the old town’s evening life. Far enough from the water to be quiet, close enough that the morning walk is not an issue.
5. Kastro Hotel — Best Value Near the Centre
~12 minutes’ walk. Straightforward, central and well-priced. The right answer when the room is a place to sleep before a boat and nothing more.
6. Aquarius Boutique Hotel — Best for a Real Night
~15 minutes’ walk. Quiet and stylish, tucked into the old town. Choose this if you are giving Heraklion an actual evening rather than treating it as a transfer point.
7. Ibis Styles Heraklion Central — Best Budget
~15 minutes’ walk. Modern, reliable and cheap. A single night here before an early sailing costs little enough that it is hard to justify the 5am alternative.
Booking Notes
Ask for a quiet room. Waterfront-facing rooms catch noise from the coastal road, and the port itself gets busy early. If you are a light sleeper the night before a ferry — which is the worst possible night to sleep badly — request a room facing inland.
Email ahead about bag storage. Central Heraklion hotels are almost universally relaxed about holding luggage before check-in or after checkout, but confirming it in writing beforehand costs nothing and removes a variable. Failing that, there are lockers in the terminal at Pier II.
Book July and August early. Port-adjacent rooms are in demand from exactly the same people catching the same summer ferries.
Do not over-optimise. The difference between a 5-minute and a 15-minute walk is ten minutes. If a hotel further in is materially nicer or cheaper, take it and set an earlier alarm.
