We booked the Viator Knossos Palace Guided Tour during a July visit to Heraklion. Here’s our honest assessment of the experience.
The Booking Process
Booking through Viator was straightforward. We received instant confirmation and a mobile voucher. The meeting point (Knossos main entrance) was clearly described with a map. The price was €38 per person, which included skip-the-line entry and the guided tour.
The Guide
Our guide, Maria, was excellent. She had a degree in archaeology and had been guiding at Knossos for over 10 years. Her knowledge of Minoan history was deep, and she had a talent for making complex topics accessible. She was also great about managing the group in the heat — keeping us in shade when possible and offering water breaks.
The Tour
The tour lasted just under 2 hours and covered all the major areas of the palace complex:
- The West Court and the theatrical area
- The Grand Staircase and the Throne Room
- The Queen’s Megaron with its famous dolphin fresco
- The storage magazines and the North Entrance
Maria wove together the history, mythology, and archaeology seamlessly. She was honest about what is known versus what is speculation, and she addressed the controversies around Evans’s reconstructions fairly.
Group Size
Our group was 12 people, which is at the upper end of what I’d consider a “small group.” It was manageable, and everyone could hear the guide. In peak season, some tours have 20+ people, which would be less ideal.
Value for Money
At €38 per person, this tour is good value. The skip-the-line entry alone saved us 30+ minutes in the July heat. The guide’s expertise added enormous value — we learned far more than we would have from the signage alone.

This is a solid, well-run tour that we’d recommend to anyone visiting Knossos for the first time. The main drawbacks — no hotel pickup and no museum inclusion — are minor. If you’re staying in Heraklion city center, Knossos is a 10-minute bus ride, so the lack of pickup isn’t a big deal.
Recommended for: First-time visitors, history enthusiasts, anyone who wants more than just wandering through ruins.
